We all know that Islam is a fast-growing religion in the western world, with Muslims representing the largest single religious group in many countries. There's no doubt this has resulted in criticism and misunderstanding from people who aren't Muslim. This two-part blog post will go over the seven main misconceptions about Islam and provide links to resources to learn more about Islam and its followers. Hopefully it will help you educate yourself on what being a Muslim truly entails so that you can have an objective idea of what your new neighbor down the street believes!
In order to have a better understanding of Islam, it starts with having an entirely different perspective on some commonly held beliefs. Below are seven of the most common misconceptions about Islam. I have also provided links to further information.
1. Islam is a racist religion... because it teaches that people are born unto their respective races, and within them are assigned the qualities of their natures.
2. Islam is a religion that promotes hate... because it teaches that all people are equal in Allah's sight, regardless of race or social standing.
3. ...because it prohibits inter-racial marriage.
4. ...because it forbids music in public places, including during prayer time.
5. ... because it prohibits celebrating birthdays.
6. ...because it prohibits the consumption of pork.
7. ...because it imposes restrictions on women, such as requiring them to wear a veil, and restricting their roles as leaders and as teachers.
8. ...because it believes that all people, religious or not, should be treated equally.
9. ...because Islam believes that those who choose not to believe will suffer forever in Hell.
10. ...because Islam requires all Muslims to pray 5 times a day and fast only during the month of Ramadan (a time for reflection).
11.
...Because Islam is a religion of hatred and violence... because it teaches that all humanity is equal in the sight of Allah, regardless of race or social standing.
These misconceptions are not only false but dangerous. Please provide yourself with the knowledge you need to make educated choices, research sources for yourself, and be an informed citizen of the world.
That's all for Part 1! Follow me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/CALEBZAID/ (I've updated my music on there!) to learn more about Islam and what it really means to be a Muslim.
I'll see you next time for Part 2!
Part Two will discuss why people believe these things about Islam.
I. Muslims Refuse to Be Called Muslims – Muslims want the world to know that they are Muslims, not Muslims because they are Muslims.
II. Muslims Do Not Wear Head Scarves Because It’s Racist – The head scarf is a symbol of Islam, therefore it’s not racist to wear one.
III. Muslims Do Not Wear Hijabs Because It’s Racist – The hijab is a symbol of Islam, therefore it’s not racist to wear one.
IV. Islam Is a Threat To Western Culture – Many people believe that Islam is a threat to western culture because it has been painted as such by media outlets who have their own agenda.
